Rare Split-Colored Lobster Donated To Aquarium

A fishing crew aboard the Timothy Michael working near Cape Cod hauled in something that happens about once in every 50 million catches: a split-colored lobster, half orange and half black right down the middle. The Wellfleet Shellfish Company has announced the catch and said the crustacean would not be going anywhere near a dinner table. Instead, she was donated to the Woods Hole Science Aquarium and handed over to the NOAA's Marine Biological Laboratory for care until the aquarium reopens, at which point she will be put on display. The rare coloring is caused by a genetic variation affecting pigmentation on each half of the body separately.
