A couple of professors at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign became suspicious over students, and their use of artificial intelligence to cheat. Karle Flanagan and Wade Fagen-Ulmschneider, known on Instagram as “The Data Science Duo,” decided it was finally time to confront their introductory data science students with their suspicions. Shortly thereafter, “mea culpa” emails came back from “dozens of undergraduates” taking the class…and even fudging attendance. There was a glaring problem, though. Those letters of apology had also been written by artificial intelligence, making the apologies a tad insincere.
