A startup called Alterego has announced what they claim is the world's first wearable device that lets people communicate silently using their thoughts. The device, called Silent Sense, works by detecting tiny muscle signals that the brain sends to the speech system before words are actually spoken. Founded by MIT researchers, the company says its headset can help people type at the speed of thought, restore speech for those who have lost it, browse the web silently, translate languages in real time, and have private conversations without making any sound.
In demonstrations, the founders showed the device working between people speaking different languages with instant translation. The technology is about 90% accurate, but needs individual training for each user. Unlike brain implants that require surgery, this device is worn around the ears like a hearing aid and uses bone conduction technology. While the concept shows promise, especially for people with speech problems, experts say more independent testing is needed before we know if it really works as advertised.
