The Foods Americans Hate Most

Everyone has that one food they just can’t stand, but some eats are just unpopular across the board. A recent YouGov survey digs into which foods Americans dislike the most, starting with open-ended responses and then ranking the top 40 offenders.

  • Anchovies (56%), liver (54%), and sardines (52%) lead the list of least-loved foods.
  • Liver earns the top spot with the most outright hate.
  • Tofu (46%), squid (44%), caviar (43%), oysters (42%), blue cheese (39%), and sushi (39%) weren’t far behind.
  • Seafood took a real hit in the rankings, along with some strong-flavored veggies like kale (31%), beets (35%), and the soul food staple chitterlings (38%).
  • Even a few fruits like tomatoes and olives made the list, though they're often mistaken for vegetables.
  • Blue cheese was the only dairy item to make the cut, and eggs turned out to be the most liked overall, with just 6% of people disliking them and 84% saying they’re fans.
  • Overall, 31 of the 40 foods on the list were actually liked by more people than disliked, so being polarizing might just come with the territory.

Some generational and gender trends popped up in the survey too:

  • Younger adults (under 45) were more likely to dislike condiments like mustard, mayo, and pickles.
  • Older adults (45+) had stronger feelings against seafood and tofu.
  • Women were more likely to hate seafood and certain meats, while men tended to dislike veggies like Brussels sprouts, spinach and broccoli.

Even with all these strong opinions, one thing is clear: Americans may complain about certain foods, but most of the time, they still kinda like them.⠀
