Florida’s Big Burmese Python Challenge Kicks Off

Floridians are getting ready for a big Burmese python hunt.

The annual python challenge is kicking off today in South Florida. The ten-day event takes place primarily in the Everglades and allows people to catch Burmese pythons with the potential to win money for the most caught and longest snake, which holds a current record of almost 19-feet.

The invasive snakes have eaten everything from gators to pets since they have no boundaries… and no natural predators in Florida. Over 10-thousand pythons have been removed from the Everglades by contractors since 2017.

The goal of the hunt is to raise awareness of the invasive species in the state and remove them from the ecosystem. People who capture the most can earn up to 25-hundred dollars.
