Are you in need of a long weekend? You’re in luck, as Memorial Day is less than two weeks away, giving many of us a three-day weekend. And a new report from AAA reveals a lot of people will be using it for a getaway.
- AAA’s Memorial Day weekend forecast projects that a record number of Americans will be traveling.
- According to their numbers, 45-million people across the country will travel at least 50 miles from home between Thursday, May 21st and Monday, May 25th.
- Despite higher gas prices, 39.1-million are expected to travel by car, while 3.66-million will be flying to their destinations for the holiday weekend.
- With 87% of Memorial Day travelers hitting the road, there’s bound to be heavy traffic.
- AAA and INRIX report that drivers should expect the heaviest congestion on Thursday (May 21st) and Friday (May 22nd) between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. and on Monday afternoon.
- They expect Sunday to be the lightest day for traffic.
- In addition to all the drivers and fliers, about 2.2-million people will be traveling by bus, train or cruise for Memorial Day weekend.
- As for where everyone is going, AAA booking data shows Orlando is the most popular destination within the U.S., while Rome, Italy, is number one for international travel.
