"Dated Cultural Attitudes" Strips Award of Name

You might ask yourself, "why do I recognize that name?  Laura Ingalls Wilder...where do I know it from?"  Little House on the Prairie?  Does that ring a bell?  Famous female writer?  Had an award named after her?   That award will no longer bear her name;  it will now be called the "Children’s Literature Legacy Award." The decision was made because according to the New York Times:

“Wilder’s books are a product of her life experiences and perspective as a settler in America’s 1800s,” the association’s president, Jim Neal, and the president of the children’s division, Nina Lindsay, said in the statement. “Her works reflect dated cultural attitudes toward Indigenous people and people of color that contradict modern acceptance, celebration, and understanding of diverse communities.”“Wilder’s books are a product of her life experiences and perspective as a settler in America’s 1800s.”

Only 23 people have received the award in 60 years that recognizes authors and illustrators whose books have created a lasting contribution to children's literature.

I'd like to know if the Mark Twain Award will now be renamed?  The first recipient of the award was Richard Pryor.  Mark Twain is hailed as a great writer and comedian, but his humor was also very racist, as it too reflected the times in which the story portrayed.  When I think back to Richard Pryor receiving this award, I have to wonder what it was that I was watching?  Were we wrong in having an award that honored the irreverent?  Was Richard Pryor offended to get the award?  How did Robin Williams get away with what he said in the final speech of the night?  Today's crowd would be rioting.  Were we right back then, and wrong now, or the other way around? Because I thought we were all laughing together.  I don't know where we lost the ability to laugh at the absurd.  Where did we lose it?
