Paul McCartney Says Music Is in Danger Due to Venues Closing

Paul McCartney is supporting a new campaign to hopefully prevent many more live music venues from closing their doors.

The Parliamentary campaign is called the U.K. Music Initiative. NME reports a politician introduced the planning bill January 10 that, if adopted, would force developers to consider how their projects would effect pre-existing businesses — like music venues — before breaking ground.

McCartney says he's throwing his full support behind the measure.

“Without the grassroots clubs, pubs and music venues my career could have been very different,” he said. “If we don’t support music at this level, then the future of music in general is in danger.”

The Beatles' rigorous performing and recording schedule at the beginning of their career in the early-'60s is the stuff of legend. The band used to perform in smokey bars and clubs for 8 hours a night, then write songs and record during the day.

The U.K. Music Campaign launched with a gathering in front of the House of Parliament, NME reports.

In addition to politicians and other officials, the dignitaries in attendance for the launch included Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason and singer/songwriter Billy Bragg.

While McCartney hasn't played many pubs over the past 40 or 50 years of selling out stadiums and arenas, he famously performed a surprise show at a California club in 2016 between Desert Trip weekends.

The former Beatle completed a world tour in the fall and more recently revealed that he's "putting the finishing touches" on a new studio album—his first since 2013.

During a Q&A via his website about his plans for 2018, McCartney revealed he's planning on releasing a new album, even hinting at its title.

"I would like to achieve making that a really great album," he said. "Fingers crossed! That’s not what it’s called, but fingers crossed! It could be… it could be the new album title."
